Dhanush is on the verge of a hat trick, after two back to back hits- Polladhavan & Yaaradi Nee Mohini. So Padikkathavan releasing for Pongal is an important film for him. His willingness to try out something new, his passion and love for cinema is his calling card. In an exclusive interview, Dhanush speaks about the film.

Why are you using Rajinikanth titles for your films?

It so happened in the case of Polladhavan & Padikkathavan. I had originally wanted to give the title TN-09-5059, my first bike, but since there was a ban on use of English titles my producer insisted on using Polladhavan as the title. And in the case of Padikkathavan, we had wanted the old Sivaji sir title Padikaadha Medhai, but the producers were unwilling to part with the title.

What is the USP of Padikkathavan?

It is a slapstick comedy with all essential ingredients to make it a racy entertainer. My character Rocky is a guy who has failed in the 10th standard and is a major embarrassment for his large family consisting of father, played by Pratap Pothen, mother, brother, sister and brother-in-law who are all graduates and post graduates and well placed! All my friends are elder to me in the film like Mayilsamy, Suman Shetty, Ganesh and Nellai Siva and they are also 10th failed! Suraaj gave me three story lines before I picked the Padikkathavan script as it suits my on screen image.

How has the film shaped out?

The first half is full of comedy and in the second half Vivek as Assault Arumugham takes over and makes it a riot. There is no double entendre or crass humour in the film and the songs of Mani Sharma is one of the highlights of the film. It is a perfect Pongal outing for the entire family.

Tamaanna looks glamorous in the film. She is very talented, and I’m sure that 2009 belongs to her. She is very dedicated and it’s been a great experience working with her.

These days you seem to be going more for your image than trying out something different. Why?

I just sort of trust my sort of films which has worked wonders for me. Why should I change it? The key to audience acceptance of has been my ordinary boy looks which has been created by my brother Selvaraghavan through films like Kathal Kondein & Pudhupettai.

It seems you have even written dialogues to suit your image in Padikathavan?

Oh, you are referring to the dialogue Enna mathiri pasangale partha pidikathu. Parka parka thaan pidikkum.. Well the dialogue was written by Suraaj and it is a pivotal scene in the film. At the end of the day it is basically the same story in all our commercial films. In Tamil cinema hero image is very important, and it works if you are able to give in each film variety in your image. If the treatment and packaging is the same then it won’t work. Our audiences are very smart and are looking for a change.
