Babes of video gaming has been done to death, but little credit goes to the fine women who play the babes of video gaming on the big screen. While the video game film category pretty much started as a joke with juvenile scripts and acting skills that would make a saas-bahu soap star blush with embarrassment. But as the games got better and more popular, so did their films and their star cast. Our tribute goes out to the most memorable women in these video game-based films.
Milla Jovovich as Alice – Resident Evil
Though not a character from the video game series, Milla Jovovich was the best thing that happened to the otherwise shallow Resident Evil movies.
What We Like: Jovovich has carried three movies in the franchise on her shoulder alone. Her character story is definitely aping Sigourney Weaver from Aliens, but she’s still doing a great job.
What We Hate: The buzz is that she may not be in the next Resident Evil movie. Good enough reason for us to stop watching right there!
Verdict: Milla Jovovich can make anything look good.
Angelina Jolie as Lara Croft – Tomb Raider
The most prominent lady in video game history gets the most prominent lady of Hollywood to play her – sounds like a recipe for success? Well, the movies sucked so that’s that.
What We Like: Angelina Jolie in skimpy or body-fit outfits throughout the movie. That aspect gets a two thumbs up from us.
What We Hate: Angelina’s British accent is as bad as Aishwarya Rai’s Hollywood accent! It’s like nails to the chalkboard.
Verdict: We love Angelina, we really do. But she’s just too big a Hollywood name to play a character like Lara Croft.
Bridgette Wilson as Sonya Blade – Mortal Kombat / Sandra Hess as Sonya Blade – Mortal Kombat Annihilation
We were all happy with Bridgette Wilson playing Sonya Blade in the first movie. She had the attitude, she had the moves, and she was perfectly feisty. The sequel pretty much destroyed all Hollywood scope for the franchise, but we have to admit – Sandra Hess was not bad at all as Sonya.
What We Like: Bridgette Wilson’s sweet pout and Sandra Hess’ memorably muddy cat-fight.
What we Hate: Mortal Kombat Annihilation was so bad that it couldn’t even make our "So bad it’s Good" list. Pure Suckage!
Verdict: Sonya Blade is a character that can pretty much make anyone look hot.
Kylie Minogue as Cammy – Street Fighter
Not a very high-profile character in the Street Fighter games, but good enough to warrant a star like Kylie Minogue play the role. Hey, if Guile could be the main character of the film, anything’s possible.
What We Like: Kylie’s bad ’80s hangover outfit does manage to do justice to Cammy’s look in the game.
What We Hate: The best fighting game series of all time spawned the cheesiest video game movie of all time. Kylie’s lack of a chunky role was the least of the movie’s issues.
Verdict: Music Videos are where it’s at for Kylie – sweet in short doses.
Mila Kunis as Mona Sax – Max Payne
It seemed a bit odd when the nasal brat from That 70’s Show was announced to play a deep and mature character like Mona Sax. Surprisingly she turned out to be one of the better aspects of the movie.
What We Like: Mila Kunis delivered the demanding role with major conviction. She was bold and, as the role required it, sexy. Or should we say Saxy!
What We Hate: The rest of the movie sucked so bad that you’d want to jab a nail in your eyes to make the pain end.
Verdict: Mila Cunis has certainly grown as an actor.
Talisa Soto as Princess Kitana – Mortal Kombat/Mortal Kombat Annihilation
A prominent name in the early 90’s Talisa Soto was great as Princess Kitana. Though we didn’t really see her fight much, but what else can you expect when you’re playing a character who’s supposedly a thousand years old?
What We Like: Hell hath no fury as a woman scorned, and Kitana was scorned plenty in the movies. A little push from her got the Kombatants overthrowing a whole dimension’s regime.
What We Hate: Move those fists girl, thing’s get done when you get your hands dirty… real dirty!
Verdict: If you wanna catch her in all her glory, go Schwing by Wayne’s World instead.
Kristana Loken as BloodRayne – BloodRayne
Though the games didn’t do well enough to warrant a full motion picture. But someone in Hollywood got bit too excited about the video game character’s topless centerfold in Playboy and decided it was a good idea to make this.
What We Like: Kristana Loken has been our pet crush since she kicked Arnie’s ass in T3. The whole movie was about her doing some very naughty stuff. What’s not to like.
What We Hate: The studio’s going ahead with a sequel to BloodRayne… hey, we didn’t like the first movie that much!
Verdict: Three words – Quality control, Girl!!!
Devon Aoki as Kasumi, Holly Valance as Cristie Allen, Jaime Pressly as Tina Armstrong and Natassia Malthe as Ayane – DOA – Dead or Alive
As bad as the movie did, we thought it wasn’t all that bad. Considering the extremely shallow storyline in the games, I’m surprised someone actually managed to get a legitimate script out of it. The girls were the true highlight though.
What We Like: Bikini Volleyball, Mud fight, Towel fight sequence. This movie is perfect on the babe factor.
What We Hate: The plot is a straight rip from a cheezy 80’s action flick. But there’s no way this movie could have been made and taken seriously.
Verdict: The women of DOA were awesome at what they did. We want a sequel!
