Your last film Arundhati was one of the top grossers in Tollywood. How has life changed after that?
Arundhati spawned a new trend in film-making. It didn’t have a hero and dealt with a supernatural theme and a subject like rebirth. It proved that the only formula for success is a good script. I also owe it to Shyam Prasad, who gave me this film. Such are the ways of the industry that they had written him off for making an average film like Anji, despite having delivered so many hits earlier. He’s proved them all wrong now.
You shouldered the entire film sans a hero. Do you feel you’ve scored a point for women-centric films?
I don’t believe in hero- or heroine-oriented films. It’s the script that does the talking. But I also don’t want that to take away from our heroes all the hard work they put in. It’s not easy to romance, dance, fight, cry and laugh, and entertain fans in those three hours.
You’re on the most-wanted list of every film-maker and working with the biggest of stars in the south.
I know, and I’m clueless as to how I’m bagging all these projects! But like all other things in my life, including my entry into films, I didn’t foresee this. I was a yoga instructor with Bharat Thakur and hadn’t even dreamt of a career in films. I know I’m hot property today, but that doesn’t stop me from giving my best to every film. If I wasn’t an actress, I’d have been a teacher.
Apparently, your remuneration also reflects the heights of your popularity. Some industry folk say they can’t afford you.
I charge what I feel I deserve. And I know it’s definitely not over the top. Let’s accept it – people come here to do good work and to make money.
B-town is the next hotspot for southern belles. Any offers?
I haven’t thought about it. But if something exciting comes by, why not? I’m open to all kinds of subjects, glam or deglam.
