After the thumping win of Unnai Pol Oruvan (Eenadu in Telugu), Kamal Haasan is now busy with the paperwork of his next project, rumoured to be a period film which a popular Tamil magazine says is based on the story of Lord Buddha’s tooth, located at the sanctuary of the Temple of Tooth in Kandy, Sri Lanka. If these reports are to be believed, this magnum opus to be directed by Mysskin has been titled 500 BC.
The legend on how the Sacred Relic of the Tooth made its way to Sri Lanka is fascinating. It says that the tooth was taken when Buddha’s mortal remains were on the funeral pyre. A popular belief in Sri Lanka says that the tooth was originally with the Kalinga kings and after several wars, it finally landed in Sri Lanka.
It is still unclear whether the film would be a period one or would be interlinked with the present day situation. A few years ago, Steven Spielberg had plans to make a period film on Lord Buddha’s Tooth. Rumour mills say that Kamal has gone to the US to meet with some Hollywood bosses to fund this mammoth project and will return in the first week of November.
