The Malayalam translation of the screenplay of writer-director-actor M. Sasikumar’s latest Subramaniapuram (also spelt as Subramaniyapuram), one of the most realistic films made in Tamil, was released in Kozhikode on by writer Punathil Kunhabdulla, who presented a copy to director Blessy. The book, written by B. Shibu, is published by Olive Publications, Kozhikode.
Director M. Mohanan, writer V.R. Sudheesh, Tamil actor and director Samudrakani, Tamil theatre activist Pralayan, and journalist Premchand spoke at the function which was presided over by M.K. Muneer, chairman, Olive Publications. The book was introduced to the audience by K.J. Ajayakumar. Subramaniapuram, one of the biggest success stories of Tamil cinema last year, is the 16th in the series of screenplays brought out by Olive.
Subramaniapuram was released in Kerala three weeks after its release in Kollywood (July 2008). According to reports, it has collected more than Rs. 20 lakhs from a major centre at the capital during the initial days itself. After Vijay starrer Pokkiri (2007), which ran for 100 days in the state, Subramaniapuram recently became the second Tamil film to touch 100 days in Kerala and is now heading towards to set a new record for a Tamil film to run more days in the state.
Set in small-town Madurai of the early 1980s, Subramaniapuram stars Jai of Chennai 600028 fame and director Sasikumar himself in prominent roles. Actress Swathi , who earlier played the sister in the Telugu version of Yaradi Nee Mohini, made her debut in Tamil with Subramaniapuram.Meanwhile, director Sasikumar is currently busy acting in Nadodigal, directed by Samuthirakani, who played the evil ’Chithappa’ in Subramaniapuram. He is also planning to produce a film titled Pasanga to be directed by Pandiarajan.
