Picture-perfect model-turned actor Laxmi Rai is in no mood to be called MS Dhoni’s girl. After hitting the headlines as MSD’s “special” friend, the brandy-eyed beauty is all set to prove that Mahi’s not the only way for her.“I was extremely upset when rumours of my alleged affair with MSD and even Sreesanth made the headlines. I knew that if I didn’t react, the rumours would die a natural death and I wouldn’t have to clarify. The real truth is we are just friends, no more and no less and let the matter end there,” she says firmly.
After wowing Malayalam and Kannada films, Laxmi now is ready for a second innings in T-town with a film opposite Ravi Teja. “I was really looking forward to making a comeback, but the project seems to be delayed a bit,” she ruefully admits. Doesn’t she have any other Tollywood offers in hand? “Well, there are plenty of offers, but I don’t want to take them up, because I want to make an impact when I come back,” she adds.
While Laxmi has made waves in other regional films, she was unable to create ripples in the Telugu film industry when her debut film Kanchanamala Cable TV bombed in 2005, “that shattered my Tollytown dreams,” she confesses. The glam diva who’s now the BO queen of Malayalam cinema and is working with “superstars Mammootty and Mohanlal” says she’s “at peace and happy” .The actress has had her share of hits and flops in Kollywood films as well. Now she’s excited about her upcoming film starring Lawrence. “It’s a desi cowboy flick and seems promising. I also have great expectations from the sequel of Naan Avan Illai,” she elaborates. Laxmi is quite a favourite in Sandalwood as well. “I have just signed a film with Shivaraj Kumar and received good BO response for four other films,” she avers.
As a multi-lingual actress, she’s been shuttling studios across states. Isn’t that tiring? “Oh yes! It’s very difficult to adjust to diverse climates and food. The last two months have been quite hectic. Mastering the languages is another tough task, but am hoping I will be able to overcome that handicap soon,”she says.
A home bird at heart, for Laxmi, beyond movies there’s no greater joy than spending time with “friends and family in Belgaum”.
And much like her Kollywood counterparts Asin and Trisha, Laxmi’s also got Bollywood dreams. In fact she has been roped in to play the female lead role opposite a top “Bollywood actor. I’ve moved to Mumbai and am getting ready to do that film. I’ve been asked to lose nine kilos for that role,” is all she can divulge about her B-Town flick. Looks like Bollywood wins yet another southern spice gal!
