As a gesture to honour for ‘Ulaganayagan’ Kamal Haasan for having completed his half-a-century of tenure in the film world, The Government of India is holding a ‘Kamal Haasan Film Festival’ in the capital. This unique ‘film festival’ will be inaugurated by Ambika Soni, Union Information & Broadcasting Minister in New Delhi on 2nd July.

Soni, during her last visit to Chennai, had announced that the Union government would initiate moves to honour the actor for having completed 50 years in the entertainment industry. The assurances now take shape, as the three-day long festival would be held from 2-4 July at New Delhi’s sprawling Siri Fort Auditorium where films starring Kamal Haasan would be screened.

A notable feature is that entry is free for whoever wishes to watch the films in the gigantic screen in the Auditorium. The first day’s first show kicks off with the film ‘Hey Ram’ and films like ‘Ek Tujhe Ke Liye’ (Hindi), Sagara Sangamam (Telugu), Maniratnam-directed ‘Nayagan’, ‘Anbae Sivam’, ‘Virumaandi’ and ‘Dasavathaaram’ would be telecast for the benefit of the fans of the star.

The festival has been aptly named as ‘The past film memories of Kamal Haasan’. Kamal, who is presently shooting abroad for his upcoming film ‘Manmadhan Ambu’ opposite Trisha, may not take part in the festival, sources say. Soni added that a separate function would be held later to honour the star after his return to India.

A lot is cooking about Kamal Haasan’s forthcoming film with director K S Ravikumar and producer Udayanidhi Stalin, which has been tentatively titled ‘Yavarum Kelir’. And the latest buzz is that Chief Minister M Karunanidhi is penning a song for the film.

Quoting sources, reports said, “Recently, Ravikumar came to Kamal and showed him the lyrics for a song which comes at an important place in the script. Kamal was stunned by the meaningful lines. Not just Kamal, but everyone who read it was very appreciative about it.”

“Only after maintaining the suspense for a long time, Ravikumar revealed the secret to Kamal that the lyricist is none other than Karunanidhi,” reports said and added: “Devi Sri Prasad has scored music for the song.”

With Trisha and Madhavan sharing the screen space with Kamal, the film, which would go on floors soon, will be a romantic comedy, we learn. “It is a dream of Udayanidhi to produce a Kamal starrer. And it is coming true now,” say sources.

Assistant director Senthil Kumar who hails from Tambaram has filed a petition in the Madras High Court. He has stated in the petition that,” Dasavatharam which had Kamal Haasan in the lead role was released a few months back.

I have written story of this film and I had sent to Kamal by registered post. Kamal assistant Murali has acknowledged this letter. But after this they never contacted me. I told that the story of Dasavatharam is mine. They did not accept this also.

I had reported this matter to the police commissioner but he did not file a case against Kamal Haasan. Then I filed a complaint petition before the Tambaram Magistrate. The Court gave directions to Alwarpet police station to take action on the petition. But they also did not take action.

Some people are threatening me using Kamal’s name saying that they will murder me. Hence I request the Court to interrogate the concerned people and direct the concerned police to file a case and take necessary action.”

The matter came before Judge Ragupathy. The government pleader Asan Muhammad Jinna appeared before the judge and said that there was no such complaint. The Judge directed the government advocate and asked him to find out from Alwarpet police station whether any such complaint has been made within a week.

Kalpathi Agoram has produced the film Madrasapattinam. This film is directed by Vijay who earlier directed Kireedom and Poi Solla Porom. Aarya and Emmy Jackson from London are pairing in this film.

The story of this film happens in 1945. The audio launch of this film was held at the World Trade Centre at Nadambakkam. I am still looking cinema with daze. Cinema is filled with daze, thrill, perturb and happiness. On the day of my film’s release I will be seeing the face of the audience. The happiness and the cheerfulness on their face is real.

Kamal Haasan’s daughter Shruthi made her debut as heroine in the Hindi film Luck. After this she composed music for her father’s film Unnai Pol Oruvan.

Shruthi who was concentrating in cutting albums have now turned her eyes towards Bollywood. While speaking about this, she said,” I am concentrating in composing music for South Indian language films. I also composed music for my father’s film.

The year 2009 was a disappointing one for Kollywood stars in Tollywood, as their dubbed films Eenadu (Kamal Haasan), Mallanna (Vikram), Pista (Vishal) and Ghatikudu (Suriya) bit the BO dust.

But looks like the A-listers of K-Town have put their commercial disasters behind them and are geared up to woo the Andhra audience with a variety of films. Interestingly, besides Rajnikanth and Kamal Haasan, other K-town stars who have a dedicated fan following in Tollywood are Suriya, Vikram and Vishal.

The newest entrant to the Telugu market – actor Karthi, brother of Suriya is pulling all stops to vigorously promote his new release and even showcased his multi-linguist skills by conversing in Telugu. Karthi says he’s “comfortable with Telugu” and “has dubbed” his own lines in the film. Producer Vikram Krishna is all set to release his big budget film Khilladi (Tiratha Vilayatu Pillai) with his brother Vishal in the lead. “It’s the story of a youngster who believes in the policy of picking three options before zeroing in on one. That’s the way, he chooses his ideal partner among three pretty damsels,” says Krishna.

While some Tamil stars are trying to regain their stardom in T-town, Vijay and Ajith already have a strong foothold in the Telugu film industry. Producer Satyanarayana who is releasing Dopidi (the Tamil original Kuruvi starred Vijay-Trisha) believes the script matters and feels his “ big entertainer has all the makings of a BO winner.” Tamil actor Prasanna’s racy thriller Padmavyuham (Nanayam in Tamil) is set for a theatrical release soon. “The storyline is gripping. It’s about a top banker who is instrumental in setting up a security system in a bank, but has to ironically breach it himself,’ says director Sakhthi Rajan.

Later this year, Suriya returns in the dubbed version of his Tamil film Singham and is also making his full-fledged debut in Telugu films with Ram Gopal Varma’s Rakthacharitra.

Bharath Reddy, who played a tough police officer in Kamal Haasan’s Unnaipol Oruvan, dons the lead role in a horror-thriller titled Kala Bhairavi, directed and produced by MGR Nambi.

Says the filmmaker, who launched a state-of-the-art film studio recently in Chennai, ’Kala Bhairavi will be made in five languages including English. Horror movies are a rarity in the country. The film will be a thriller with unexpected twists and turns.’

’Since horror movies have an universal appeal, we are planning to do the movie in Tamil, Telugu, Hindi and English besides Tamil. To be shot with state-of-the-art equipment from Hollywood, the movie would go on floors soon,’ he adds.

Kamal Haasan’s next will be a romantic comedy to be directed by K.S. Ravikumar for Red Giant Movies. The film is in its pre-production stage and the latest buzz is about the leading lady.

Earlier, there were reports of Tamannaah being the choice. Now the latest we hear is that our Ulaganayagan is considering Nayantara for the role. It is also said that it was Prabhu Deva who proposed this idea to Kamal.
