Movie: Theeratha Vilayatu Pillai

Director: Thiru

Producer: GK Film Corporation

Music: Yuvan Shankar Raja

Cast: Vishal, Neetu Chandra, Tanushree Dutta, Sarah Jane, Santhanam

Vishal’s TVP starts of in a breezy manner and sets the mood for an engaging romantic comedy but has a far-out plot. The comedy team of Santhanam, Satyan and Mayilsami are a super treat and holds the film together in the first half, while Prakash Raj in a cameo passes muster.

Karthik (Vishal), is a upper middle class guy whose father (Mouli) and mother are bank employees. He is on the lookout for a job and believes in the philosophy that he wants “the best in life”. The fun loving hero hangs around with his friends -an auto driver (Santhanam), a teashop owner (Mayilsami) and a traffic constable (Sathyan)!

He decides to fall in love with as many girls and select the best among them! His explanation is when you can choose your clothes, mobiles and bikes, why not your partner in life? And the day he decides to do this, he bumps into three girls and vows to make them fall in love with him.

In no time, the Casanova that he is, studies the psychology of Priya (Sarah Janes), Tejaswini (Neetu Chandra) and Jyothi (Tanusree Dutta) and as predicated, all the three fall in love with him. Rest of the story is when Tejaswini who finds out his intentions decides to take revenge with the help of Priya.

By the time, Karthik is cupid struck and is finally ready to settle down with Priya. He has a change of mind and realises that he had done wrong to the other girls and is ready to turn a new leaf. But can the leopard ever change its spots?

In fact, the film’s first half is engaging with one-liners from Santhanam. But post-intermission the film nosedives drastically, its screenplay skidding off the path and going into predictable territory as the film meanders its way through 2 hours and 50 minute.

The emotional scenes in the second half are so laboured; the film loses its grip on your attention completely. What started out as such an enjoyable screen experience is irreparably damaged by careless writing.

Yet, Theeratha Vilayatu Pillai is not entirely unwatchable. The production values, costumes and camera by Aravind Krishna are good. Songs by Yuvan fail to impress. Vishal is earnest and sincere and struggle hard to have a change of image. But does this new image suit him? He imitates Suriya in body language and dialogue delivery.

Among the girls, it is Neetu Chandra who plays her part well. Sarah is a big letdown as she looks wooden throughout and her lip sync is pathetic. Tanusree is no heroine material. Ultimately, it’s an average film, at best time-pass viewing. Watch it with no expectations and you won’t be too disappointed.

Verdict: Average
